Guy Montag
As the main protagonist in the story, Guy Montag is a 30-year-old fireman living his life just like everyone else: unquestioningly and ignorantly. Until one day he meets his new neighbor, Clarisse, who teaches him how to really look at and enjoy everything. And that he may be used to smelling like kerosene, but others aren't. When she suddenly and mysteriously disappears, Montag starts to wonder about something Clarisse asked him: did firemen use to put out fires instead of start them? And if they did, then what happened that the government banned books and gave the firemen a new role? What is in books that makes them so different? Montag then tries to read a book, and he decides to help sabotage the firemen to try to get society to read books again, making him a dynamic character because he changed. |
Mildred Montag
The wife of Guy Montag, Mildred is, lets say, not the brightest bulb. She usually spends her time in the parlor watching the T.V. walls, watching her 5 minute programs and spending time with her "family" in the walls. At other times, she listens to her Seashell radio earpiece. She is very similar, and maybe even the same, as every other ignorant, short attention span person in the city. But although she isn't very smart, and she forgets all the time, she knows one thing: Mildred Montag does not want anything to do with the books Guy has. She even called the firemen to burn her own house. Because she didn't change to like the books, she is a static character. |
Captain Beatty
Captain of the firemen, Beatty is an older guy, and he knows what he wants and how to get it done. Although it is clear he used to have a passion for reading, he now believes that fiction books only tell lies about people and places that never existed, that they tell you one thing and go back on their word and tell you another. He also believes that nonfiction is only people screaming at each other that they're right and using facts as an excuse. He thinks books are a problem, and that the way to deal with a problem is to burn it. Beatty says this in different ways all throughout the book, making him a static character. |
Faber
An old professor at Harvard University, Faber is like the undercover brains of the operation he and Montag are planning. He thought of the idea to plant books in firehouses, to frame them and force them to burn their own building to try and get rid of the firemen. He also gave Montag a green earpiece so he could give Montag advice and so they could communicate without Faber having to leave his house. When Montag stopped by Faber's house while he was being chased, Faber told Montag to run to the river to meet up with other professors, saving Montag's life. |
